Measuring Up: What I Am Worth

By Nancy Flory Published on August 15, 2017

I’ve wondered many times if I’m worth anything. It’s that feeling at the pit of the stomach that questions whether anything I’ve done or who I am really matters. More than once I’ve measured my value by worldly, rather than scriptural principles. Perhaps if I was thinner or smarter or … you name it. I’ve come to understand that my value does not lie in the things of this world but in Christ. So, what does He say about me?

I am valuable because He made me and made me perfectly. “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well” (Ps. 139-14).

My value to God is in my inner beauty. “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised” (Prov. 31:30). God does not want me to use outward appearances as a measuring stick for my worth. “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight” (1 Peter 3:2-4).

God is not concerned with outer beauty. He wants to know if I fear the Lord and have a gentle spirit. Am I Christ-like? Do I have empathy for others? Do I offer forgiveness to those who’ve hurt me? If I do, I’m beautiful in His sight.

Am I worried about outer beauty? Beauty fades. If my inner beauty doesn’t measure up with God’s definition of beauty, I’m essentially “whitewashing” a coffin (Matt. 23:28-30).

I matter. I am more valuable than His amazing creation. “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? (Matthew 6:26). The image below is of a hummingbird’s nest. These tiny creatures matter to God. How much more do I!

Most of all, I’m valuable because Christ paid for me. I was bought with His blood. I am His eternally. “For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ…” (1 Peter 18-19).

The value that the world places on me is irrelevant. The Creator in His divine plan made me wonderfully, treasures me completely and loves me unconditionally. I’d say that’s pretty valuable.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I thank You that I am fearfully and wonderfully made. I thank You that my beauty isn’t measured by the world’s standards but Yours. I thank You that my worth does not come from anything or anyone but You. Most of all, I thank You for sending Your son to die in my place, an immeasurably beautiful and invaluable gift, which shows just how much I am worth to You.
