Joy Break: Watching a Miracle

By Nancy Flory Published on August 7, 2018

When we turn on our television or smart phones we are bombarded with news that brings us down. Where are all the good stories? Those stories are still there. Here’s one that we hope will bless you.

A video of a young man stocking shelves in a grocery store has gone viral. Not because it’s exciting to watch a 17-year-old put away orange juice while on a grocery run with his family. It’s the fact that the young man — Jack Ryan Edwards, also known as Ziggy — has been diagnosed with autism.

Random Acts of Kindness

Ziggy, with his sister Delaney Edwards Alwosaibi and their father Sid Edwards, went to the store for groceries recently. Sid noticed that Ziggy stood mesmerized as a store employee stocked the orange juice. The employee, Jordan Taylor, told WAFB that he was prompted to ask if Jack Ryan wanted to help. “Something in the back of my mind was just like, ‘Ask if he wants to help you.’” So he did.

Ziggy helped Taylor stock the shelves for over half an hour, with Taylor encouraging the teen as they went along.

A Gift

Alwosaibi said Taylor’s actions were a gift to their family. “He could have made an excuse and said he couldn’t allow him to help. Instead, he let him have his moment and in turn gave my family a moment we will never forget. It might seem like nothing to others, but as you can hear my dad say in the video, ‘I’m watching a miracle right now.’”

“It was a big deal,” Sid said about seeing his son being able to help stock shelves. “To me, when you go to a grocery store with an autistic kid, especially when they’re young, people don’t understand. They’re not very accepting.”

“Somehow this young man reached my son … he went into Jack Ryan’s world.”

The video has been shared over 9,500 times and has garnered over 2,000 comments.
