Joy Break: ‘Thank God I Saved Him’

By Nancy Flory Published on May 29, 2018

When we turn on our television or smart phones we are bombarded with news that brings us down. Where are all the good stories? Those stories are still there. Here’s one that we hope will bless you.

An illegal immigrant in Paris is being hailed as a hero after saving the life of a child by scaling a multi-story building. The “Spider-Man of Paris” climbed up to the fourth story of a building to rescue a four-year-old who was hanging by his hands on the outside of the balcony’s ledge. The child lived on the 6th floor and had apparently already fallen two stories before he managed to grab the fourth floor’s balcony rail.

Twenty-two-year-old Mamoudou Gassama told French media he got involved after hearing horns honking and people shouting. “I climbed up like that and, thank God, I saved him,” he continued. “I was scared when I saved him and we went into the living room, I started trembling and I couldn’t stand up anymore, I had to sit down.”

Gassama’s climb was published first on social media. French President Emmanuel Macron was so inspired he urged to Gassama to apply for citizenship.

Gassama is an illegal immigrant from Mali. He’d spent time in Libya and Italy before slipping into France. Macron told him that without his act of heroism, he would’ve been on a deportation list. On Tuesday, Gassama received French residency and signed a contract with the Paris fire service.

The father of the child left the boy alone. He has been taken into custody, according to AFP. The child’s mother was not in Paris at the time.
