Joy Break: First Baby Born to a Sitting Senator
When we turn on our television or smart phones we are bombarded with news that brings us down. Where are all the good stories? Those stories are still there. Here’s one that we hope will bless you.
Happy news out of Capitol Hill. Senator Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., gave birth Monday to a daughter. Maile Pearl Bowlsbey is the first baby born to a sitting U.S. senator. Other moms in the Senate had their children before entering Congress, reported the Chicago Sun Times.
Duckworth, 50, and her husband, Bryan Bowlsbey, already have one daughter. Abigail was born when Duckworth served in the House.
On Monday Duckworth tweeted, “Bryan, Abigail and I couldn’t be happier to welcome little Maile Pearl as the newest addition to our family… .”
Bryan, Abigail and I couldn’t be happier to welcome little Maile Pearl as the newest addition to our family and we’re deeply honored that our good friend Senator Akaka was able to bless her name for us—his help in naming both of our daughters means he will always be with us. https://t.co/KXyNf65KxA

Duckworth said Maile Pearl’s name came from her husband’s great-aunt. She said that becoming pregnant was a “struggle,” and she employed a fertility specialist. On Monday, she described her family as “complete.” She tweeted, “We’re also so grateful for the love and support of our friends and family, as well as our wonderful medical teams for everything they’ve done to help us in our decades-long journey to complete our family.”
