Joy Break: Belly Balancing, Basketball at 91 and Other Stories to Make You Smile

By Nancy Flory Published on June 29, 2017

When we turn on our television or smart phones we are bombarded with news that brings us down. Where all the good news gone? Those stories are still there. Here are a few we hope will brighten your day.

Sisterly Love

A 17-year-old aspiring musician in Ireland wrote a song for her little brother who has Down Syndrome. She posted a video on Facebook performing it for him. Her post went viral, garnering over 78,000 views already.

Leah Kirwan wrote the song for her younger brother Noah. Leah’s song shows how much she loves her little brother: “The day I saw your baby face, you make this world a better place, Your eyes they lit up the whole room, we were taking you home very soon. Your tiny hands and little laugh, you were growing up way too fast.” She adds:

Cause you are a star to me and everyone in this family, you can live the life you want and be what you want to be,
Despite your differences and troubles in the path, I’m always here for you just remember that.

The two first gained attention in 2015 with their version of Noah’s favorite song, DJ David Guetta’s Titanium, which Leah posted to Facebook. Leah and her family are “still overwhelmed” by the response. “I can’t believe the attention the video received but I’m delighted it did,” Leah told the Express. “Noah is my brother and my best friend, we love making each other smile.”

Mommy Instinct

The Grand Park Zoo in Seoul, South Korea, now has video proof of how protective mommy elephants are. The elephant’s calf slipped into the deep end of a pool. The mother seems to panic and another elephant comes to help. Even another elephant behind a fence in the background is panicking.

They realized they could not save the baby unless they entered the shallow end of the pool. The second elephant seems to push the mother that way.

The two elephants reached the calf in time. Together they walked the calf out of the pool and all is well.

Belly Balancing Toddler Washes Dishes

Not every parent has a toddler who actually wants to do the dishes. Clint Callahan from New Jersey does. His tiny tot Miles washes dishes with style. He balances his belly on the counter while he works. “It’s never too early to teach your kids to clean up after themselves,” Clint said. “I don’t care his feet can’t touch the ground, it’s Sunday clean up boy.”

In the following video, Clint asks his son what he is doing. Miles replies, “wash bowl.”

Staying Young

The San Diego Splash basketball team is full of vibrant and athletic women. There’s something special about this team, though: the members are all over the age of 80. Their game is played on a half court for 30 minutes. But 30 minutes of basketball for women from ages 80 to 91 is still impressive. “We are the oldest team in the league, yes, definitely” commented 89-year-old Cori Thompson.

But that doesn’t mean they’re not competitive. “Oh yeah, we play to win, absolutely,” added Meg Skinner.
