Jim Garlow Leaving Pulpit to Focus on ‘Governmental Ministries’

By Al Perrotta Published on September 4, 2018

Jim Garlow, longtime senior pastor of San Diego’s Skyline Church, remembers the exact day he sensed a “governmental annointing” come upon him. It was August 13, 1956. He was all of 9 years old.

Now, six decades later, Garlow is set to fulfill the call and move full-time into “governmental ministry.” Garlow has announced he will step aside as Skyline Church pastor by year’s end to focus on bringing “worship of the Lord and learning from the Word” to key governmental cities and leaders nationally and internationally.

Garlow has already been working towards this day for several years. He began establishing a presence in Washington, D.C., in 2014 and the United Nations in 2017. Pastor Rick Scarbourgh heads the D.C.-based ministry, while former Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann is executive director of Skyline’s U.N. ministry.

Garlow’s also established a presence in Jerusalem. Charisma News reports Garlow and wife Rosemary Schindler Garlow also will continue to co-sponsor a Bible (Tanakh) study which began earlier this year in Israel’s parliament.

Skyline Church is creating a new organization to unify Garlow’s “governmental ministry.” He’s grateful at how the Lord is moving.

It is so gratifying to bring worship of the Lord and the message of the love of God in these spheres. And it is such a privilege to be part of a group of Jews and Christians who meet in the Knesset in Jerusalem to study the Bible β€” the Tanakh β€” together as we learn from a rabbi who is a Member of the Israeli Parliament. What we are all experiencing is so inspiring.

Leaving Skyline Church … and Moving Into His Next Phase

Jim Garlow has spent 23 years as senior pastor at Skyline Church. “I cannot tell you how difficult it is to leave pastoral ministry to the people who I so love,” he said. They are wonderful! I will miss them so much.”

He promised Skyline will be left in good hands, with a new senior pastor set to be announced in a couple weeks. “The church congregation will be very pleased with the next pastor and will be well cared for. Skyline Church is about to experience some very exciting days.”

Garlow says he is “immensely grateful that the congregation of Skyline recognizes the reality of a ‘governmental calling.'” And he is ready to be sent off into what he calls the “third phase” of his life.

Most people go through two or three phases in their lives. Moses, for example, went through three phases: the adopted son of Pharaoh’s daughter, a shepherd in the desert and then leading the children of Israel. My life will consist of three phases, as well: a lengthy and extended academic journey, decades of pastoring and now this third and final phase of life in the realm of the governmental. I approach this next phase of ministry with great excitement …

Please join The Stream in congratulating Pastor Jim Garlow on his new ministry, and pray him much success as he moves to impact the leaders in government with the heart of God.
