James Robison: A Challenge and Prayer in the Face of the Sutherland Springs Church Massacre

By James Robison Published on November 6, 2017

In the wake of Sunday’s horror in Sutherland Springs, Texas, Stream founder James Robison went to Facebook to offer the nation a powerful prayer and a challenge. He says in this hour of sorrow, “Lovers of faith and freedom are being forced into unity by crisis and pressure from the evil one and evil doers.”

I can pray for these victims as requested, but they, as well as the Vegas victims, could still be alive if after the Sandy Hook slaughter,America had made some legislative changes. There is a difference in being able to legally acquire a handgun for personal protection and being allowed to legally amass an inventory of high powered assault weapons, as both of these shooters had.

    • Andrew Mason

It has been stated elsewhere that the shooter’s discharge should have precluded him from legally acquiring firearms. If that’s the case then stricter gun laws would have had no effect as those already in effect were ignored. Worse, stricter gun laws may have precluded the neighbour from coming to the aid of the church.

      • This morning I saw an interview with the Texas attorney general, who deflected any proposed new gun laws, saying that evil people will get guns one way or another. And besides, he said, “We already have laws against murder.”

So relax, because nothing will happen. Even proposals to ban “bump stocks” have stalled, thanks to the NRA. The occasional gun massacre is apparently the price we have to pay to let gun hobbyists indulge in their fun.

        • Chip Crawford

How do the tight gun laws in Chicago help out there? The gangs continue to get them, but law abiding people cannot. What about New York with its strong gun laws?

          • SophieA

An illustrative analogy: Let’s reduce drunk driving by taking cars away from sober drivers.

          • Cars are designed for travel. Guns are designed to kill.

          • Paul

I own guns that are really bad choices to use to kill something, but I don’t expect you to understand

          • Can you give me an example, for my own edification?

          • Paul

A flare gun is a poor choice to kill something with, unless your goal is arson. It could be lethal though if used poorly but let’s not forget it is designed to be a signalling device to save lives.

Generally speaking I’d rather be shot by my 22 snub nose revolver at 30 yards than be hit by a car at 30+mph. While it is possible a perfectly placed shot could be lethal, most would be survivable with full recovery. The car is more likely to kill or maim me if I survived.

You see, the 22 snub nose I own is designed and intended as either a recreational plinker or a training tool for larger caliber hanguns in the same platform. A 38 +p or 357 are better suited to defensive use in the same form factor especially if using appropriate ammunition that is designed to maximize tissue damage/stopping ability, as opposed to target ammo that is designed to make clean holes through paper.

Similarly a large heavy target shooting rifle is a poor choice for hunting. It is designed to sit at a shooting line on a rest, with optics set up for the particular target and competition, using ammo finely tuned to maximize accuracy not tissue damage. These are set ups where a 1/2″ at 100 yards is the difference between winning and losing. Could it be used to kill something? Sure, but most hunters would much rather choose a smaller lighter option, much easier to carry in the field, accurate enough for the task it was designed for, assuming the use of appropriate ammo of course that kills quick instead of injures and the wounded animal runs away to die days later.

Not to mention I have nail guns (both pneumatic and chemically accelerated) which can be quite lethal if used inappropriately but are designed for another task.

I know people who build purpose built cannons with explosive charges for avalanche control. These devices could be quite lethal and destructive but clearly that is not what they are designed for.

Simply saying “guns are designed to kill” reveals the depth of your ignorance and how politicized your perspective is. Get out a little and experience the real world and learn something.

          • Chip Crawford

Guns are designed to shoot bullets; killing is one result, wounding or deterring as the police or those defending themselves are others. Sorry your dry, dismissive, arm’s length rejoinders don’t go over on this site. People here care and reason more than you credit – possibly more than you do.

          • Elizabeth Litts

Better set the terrorist gangs strait on that one–seems they are killing lots of people with cars and trucks for a long time now.

          • Elizabeth Litts

            See my comment above

The guns in Chicago are being brought in from other states with lax gun control.

          • Chip Crawford

Bogus. Baltimore, New York, a lot of heavy murder places have tough gun laws, disarming the innocent, making them vulnerable. No assault weapons is right. Better background checks, close loopholes. However, your “lax” is without the facts. Bogus Pocus.

And it’s replies like this that irk the gun hobbyists. Criminals don’t respect the law yet Leftists seem to think that everything will be solved by passing more laws. Since only law abiding citizens obey laws the result is a disarmed population. And as Chip notes below, much of the worst gun violence occurs in places where the Left has successfully disarmed the law abiding population. DC has strict laws, and yet the highest murder rate in the country.

          • SophieA

Old Chuckie A. is spouting nonsense again. If Chuck cannot comprehend the irony in having a gun ban enforced by government men with guns, then he fails to understand why the Second Amendment was written in the first place.

          • stan schmunk

So why was the 2nd Amendment written?

    • Hmmm…

If only all liberals could have their way in all matters, everything would be fixed and work perfectly. It is where they can’t that serious problems persist. Right?

      • Chip Crawford

Had the Democrats won the last election, their immigration glut would be well underway. Their anticipated outnumbering would sweep many of their takeover and government control initiatives. Soon, if not by now, there would be house-to-house confiscation of guns of citizenry. The government where they control would man the arsenal in their locales across the country. Those they did not as yet would find themselves with serious challenges and adverse circumstances. Reference the IRS persecution of the Tea Party, et al, a microcosm of their intended m.o. Instead, thank God, literally, we have a chance to impede that crooked party’s overrun, and they are actually unraveling. May they come to soundness once again. They haven’t always been fascist leaning.

        • stan schmunk

          Nonsense.

          • Chip Crawford

            Wrong again.

          • stan schmunk

            OK then…total conspiracy theory nonsense.

          • Chip Crawford

            Wrong again.

  • Paul

James, what scriptures do you turn to for supporting your position that we defend ourselves, families and church family?

    • Chip Crawford

What scriptures do you turn to that we not?

      • Paul

Chip, I’m in agreement with James in this video and am sincere in my request to hear from him what scripture he leans on in this regards.

The other side of the debate loves to talk about turning the other cheek and live/die by the sword (both taken out of context IMO). What is needed is more articles discussing the scriptural basis for defensive use of force.

        • Chip Crawford

Certainly the verse telling a man that he needs to provide for his family would enter in. How would material provision suffice if mortal protection were not in force, as required? That’s one consideration.

          • Paul

Yes, I have others as well, but I’m hoping to hear James’ thoughts on this.

          • Chip Crawford

Sorry to butt in 🙂 I appreciate you. Thank you

  • NellieIrene

Very passionate words. A lot of churches are way a head of you and have designated people within their congregations who carry a concealed firearm. I can only imagine that this tragic event will cause that number to grow larger. If we are truly in the last days, and I believe that we are, then it is not going to get better. We need to be prepared.

1 Peter 5:8, Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

When people, who are influenced by the evil of this present age, start getting shot as soon as they aim their weapon at the innocent, I believe these mass shootings will decline in number.

    • Paul

Unfortunately there are other church leaders who foolishly consider such security measures as ‘not trusting God’. Ironically they lock the doors and set the alarm when leaving the building.
