House Speaker to Intelligence Director: Deny Clinton Access to Classified Materials

Presumed Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton should be denied access to classified materials, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) told Fox News’ Megyn Kelly last night.

This morning, Ryan made the recommendation formal in a letter to the Director of U.S. Intelligence, James Clapper.

“As a former vice presidential nominee, I am keenly aware that Secretary Clinton is set to begin receiving classified intelligence briefings after the Democratic National Convention,” wrote Ryan. “However, Director Comey stated that ‘this is not to suggest that in similar circumstances, a person who engaged in this activity would face no consequences. To the contrary, those individuals are often subject to security or administrative sanctions.’ Given the FBI’s findings, denying Secretary Clinton access to classified information certainly constitutes appropriate sanctions. This is necessary to reassure the public that our nation’s secrets are secure.”

FBI Director James Comey said on Tuesday that while Clinton and staff members were “extremely careless” in how they handled classified e-mails during her four-year tenure as U.S. Secretary of State, what the former First Lady did was not something that rose to the level of criminal charges.

Republicans called Comey in for a hearing today over the announcement, which was criticized by leading Republicans and conservatives. In another letter released this morning, Ryan asked Comey to “release all of the findings from” the FBI’s 11-month investigation into Clinton’s e-mail practices.

“Right now, there are simply too many unanswered questions,” Ryan wrote. “While we have started oversight hearings, as you stated earlier this week, ‘given the importance of the matter, I think unusual transparency is in order.’ I completely agree.”

According to Ryan, transparency is “why I am requesting that you release all of the findings from your investigation. The American people deserve to know exactly what your investigation uncovered and why the FBI came to the decision to recommend that no criminal charges be brought against Secretary Clinton.”

In his letter to Clapper, Ryan wrote that “there is no legal requirement for you to provide Secretary Clinton with classified information, and it would send the wrong signal to all those charged with safeguarding our nation’s secrets if you chose to provide her access to this information despite the FBI’s findings.”

Ryan closed both letters by referencing the need to assure the security of America’s intelligence.
