Hispanic Evangelicals Respond to Orlando Shooting

Rev. Salguero: “We want to dispel the myth that evangelicals hate gays."

Orlando’s Hispanic evangelicals are coming together in the aftermath of Sunday’s shooting in an Orlando, Florida nightclub that killed 49 and wounded 53.

Hispanics made up nearly half of Florida’s population growth last year, according to ABC News. Most of the 49 people shot and killed in Pulse nightclub Sunday were Hispanic, as it was Latin night at the gay dance club.

Christianity Today reported that a Latino Pentecostal megachurch in Orlando, Iglesia El Calvario, reached out to the community by hosting funerals for victims of the massacre and offering grief counseling and outreach for Orlando and its LGBT community.

Christianity Today’s Kate Shellnutt interviewed Gabriel Salguero, one of the church’s pastors and the founder of the National Latino Evangelical Coalition.

Salguero said his message to the LGBT community has been that the church loves them and they are welcome there. He said he thinks the community could feel the church’s “genuineness, that authenticity of shared pain.”

“We want to dispel the myth that evangelicals hate gays,” Salguero said. “We have a lot in common, not least of which is our shared humanity… I spoke to a young Puerto Rican gay man who grew up in the Pentecostal church, and he said, ‘I’m shocked that a Pentecostal Latino pastor led the prayer at this vigil.’ I just said to him, ‘Jesus would have led the prayer.’”

Salguero emphasized the prevalence of prayer in the church’s efforts to aid those impacted by the tragedy.

“We’re on our knees praying because we know that we absolutely, absolutely need God in this situation,” Salguero said. “If there’s anything I learned it’s that we utterly depend on God, whether we’re the caregiver or the victim.”

While not all pastors have had a gracious response to the massacre, other Hispanic evangelical leaders are speaking against the violence and trying to help the community heal.

“Today’s deplorable act of terrorism goes against everything we stand for as Americans and as Christians,” said Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Leadership Conference. “We call upon all Americans to come together for the purpose of building a firewall of love, grace, truth and respect against intolerance, hatred, bigotry and violence.”

A prayer service will be held tonight in Orlando, hosted by the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference and the Fraternity of Councils and Evangelical Entities of Florida, Hola Arkansas reported.

“In the midst of the pain, hurt, confusion and fear, we are here to shine the light of Christ,” said NHCLC vice president Rev. Tony Suarez. “My prayer is that this service can be just one step in bringing peace and healing to Orlando and our nation.”
