Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval: ‘Humbled,’ But Not Interested in Supreme Court Vacancy

President Obama’s trial balloon for the Supreme Court just went pop, and the man whose name he floated is the guy holding the needle.

Nevada’s Republican Governor Brian Sandoval asked Thursday that his name be removed from consideration as a possible replacement for Justice Antonin Scalia.

“Earlier today, I notified the White House that I do not wish to be considered at this time for possible nomination to the Supreme Court of the United States,” he said in his statement, “The notion of being considered for a seat on the highest court is beyond humbling and I am incredibly grateful to have been mentioned.”

As The Stream reported Wednesday, Gov. Sandoval’s name was leaked by the Administration, which had hoped that by considering a Latino Republican the GOP-led Senate would back down from its vow to not approve any Supreme Court nominee until a new president is in office.

Sandoval is pro-choice and opened the door for same-sex marriage in Nevada. He is also favored by Democratic Minority Leader Harry Reid. But he apparently wasn’t far enough left for Hillary Clinton, who was already saying “no dice” to the one-time chief of Nevada’s Gaming Commission before he bowed out. “I know the governor has done some good things,” she said of Sandoval during a campaign stop in South Carolina, “But I sure hope the president chooses a true progressive who will stand up for the values and the interests of the people of this country.”
