From a Fundamentally Transformed to a Foundationally Restored America
The Scripture verse that came to mind the morning of November 6th was Psalm 126:3 (New International Version):
“The Lord has done great things for us
and we are filled with joy.”
I had been reading through the Old Testament in the months leading into the election. When reading both books of Kings and Chronicles, I was struck by how when the kings of the Israelites followed God’s law, their nation was blessed. However, if they veered off into worshiping false gods, like Ashtoreth and Baal, their nation was cursed.
We have seen a tremendous downhill slide in our country over the past three and a half years and were anticipating that, with a win by hook or by crook of the Democrat Party, an even deeper dive would occur as they continued and expanded their policies. For now, we may have garnered a reprieve — but that depends on whether our nation fully returns to the God who loves and cares for us.
A Miracle
The morning of November 6, these two verses jumped out at me:
I have seen that fools may be successful for the moment,
but then comes sudden disaster. (Job 5:3)
And…
He [the Lord] does great things too marvelous to understand.
He performs countless miracles. (Job 5:9 NLT)
I had been praying for miracles in this election season (well before the first assassination attempt against Trump on July 13), and it appeared that God controlled events in ways that could not be chalked up to mere “coincidences.” Trump himself has shown unbelievable resilience in the face of a vicious onslaught from a relentless Deep State, and has emerged not only victorious, but worthy of a life that may have reached legendary status.
Trump’s character might also have been truly and deeply changed by the events since his brush with death. Anyone listening to his speech in the wee hours of November 6would probably detect more than a hint of humility.
A New Lease on Life
Two other verses surely apply to what Trump’s adversaries have plotted and hurled against him:
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him,
who have been called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28 NIV)
And this verse from when Joseph confronted his brothers who sold him into slavery, only for them to find that Joseph was now exalted to a position in Egypt to bless them:
“You intended to harm me,
but God intended it all for good.
He brought me to this position so I could
save the lives of many people.” (Genesis 50:20 NLT)
Is America out of the woods because of the results of this election? Will the Christians and Jews and men and women of goodwill who today are celebrating a huge victory go back to their same old same-old routines tomorrow? Hopefully not. Can anyone deny that our lackluster vigilance led to our nation being blindsided by evil influences? And that, like the proverbial frog in the slowly boiling pot of water, we almost woke up too late?
The pastors I have spoken with personally or watched on television fortunately all realize that the election of 2024 was not our finish line. It’s our starting point.
It is up to all of us to continue praying for this new administration. To pray for wisdom and steadfastness in purging the evil from our nation and encouraging righteousness in all facets of society and culture.
The fundamental transformation of America may have finally been derailed. Now the foundational restoration can begin.
As our Founding Fathers wrote in the Declaration of Independence, “with a firm reliance on Divine Providence,” we can succeed in restoring true freedom and responsibility to America, and renew hope and inspiration for other nations across the globe as well.
