Federally Funded AmeriCorps Workers Helped Girls Get Abortions, Violating Federal Law

A forthcoming federal investigation has found that six AmeriCorps volunteers went with pregnant girls to abortion clinics in parts of New York City. Such work as “abortion doulas” is a direct violation of federal funding rules.

The Hill reported the news from a source familiar with a report by the Office of Inspector General, and The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency that oversees AmeriCorps, confirmed its validity.

“We are deeply disappointed that the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) authorized national service participants to perform prohibited activities,” the CNCS said in a statement, adding that “the grantee broke the law and violated the spirit of national service.”

The National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC), is one of the community health centers that works with AmeriCorps’s health branch. The group claims that it reported the violations and “self-reported to the proper authorities” as soon as they learned of the abortion escorts’ activities. However, the NACHC reported only suspending the “abortion doulas” in question “until they and their site supervisors were retrained and revised member service contracts were reviewed and signed,” according to NACHC COO Dave Taylor.

The full report is due online today.
