FBI Changes Mind, Releases Full 911 Transcripts to Prevent ‘Distraction’

A top FBI agent also insisted the alleged shooter was not representing Islam.

Under pressure from Republican leaders, the FBI has reversed course and released the full transcript of 911 calls made by Omar Mateen during his deadly terror attack at a popular gay Orlando nightclub. Only hours earlier, the Bureau released a partial transcript that had removed Mateen’s repeated pledges of allegiance to ISIS.

“Unfortunately, the unreleased portions of the transcript that named the terrorist organizations and leaders have caused an unnecessary distraction from the hard work that the FBI and our law enforcement partners have been doing to investigate this heinous crime,” said the federal agency in a statement issued at 3:00 p.m. Eastern, according to NBC News.

“As much of this information had been previously reported, we have re-issued the complete transcript to include these references in order to provide the highest level of transparency possible under the circumstances.”

Here is the uncensored transcript of a 911 call from inside Pulse from Omar Mateen to an Orlando Police Dispatcher at 2:35 a.m., Sunday, June 12.

OD:     Emergency 911, this is being recorded.

OM:     In the name of God the Merciful, the beneficent [Arabic].

OD:     What?

OM:     Praise be to God, and prayers as well as peace be upon the prophet of God [Arabic]. I wanna let you know, I’m in Orlando and I did the shootings.

OD:     What’s your name?

OM:     My name is I pledge of allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi of the Islamic State.

OD:     OK, what’s your name?

OM:     I pledge allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, may God protect him, on behalf of the Islamic State [Arabic].

OD:     Alright, where are you at?

OM:     In Orlando.

OD:     Where in Orlando?
[End of call.]

As previously reported by The Stream, the Obama administration decided to censure Mateen’s remarks, removing the mention of Islamic State and ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. The partial transcript’s release caused an uproar among top Republicans like Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI).

“Selectively editing this transcript is preposterous,” Ryan said in a statement. “We know the shooter was a radical Islamist extremist inspired by ISIS. We also know he intentionally targeted the LGBT community. The administration should release the full, unredacted transcript so the public is clear-eyed about who did this and why.”

After the about-face, Ryan released another statement offering some praise, but also criticism,

I am glad that the administration reversed its decision and has now shared the full transcript with the American people. But this should have never been an issue in the first place. The attempt to selectively edit the record reflects a broader, more serious problem: This administration’s continued effort to downplay and distract from the threat of radical Islamist extremism. This is unacceptable. To defeat terrorism we have to be clear-eyed about whom we’re fighting.

During today’s FBI press conference about the transcript release, FBI Assistant Special Agent Ronald Hopper declared that Mateen “identified himself as an Islamic soldier, who pledged allegiance to a terrorist organization which was bent on killing Americans.”

“He does not represent the religion of Islam,” continued Hopper, “but a perverted view, which, based upon what we know today, was inspired by extremist killers.”

NBC reported that, contrary to witnesses who say Mateen was a regular at the gay bar where he killed 49 and wounded more than 50, and those who say Mateen used a dating app popular among gay men, the FBI says it has no evidence Mateen was same-sex attracted. The agency claims Mateen was on dating websites for women even as he was married to his second wife.

The FBI’s claim that Mateen had never entered the Pulse bar prior to the June 12 slaughter is contradicted by his second wife, who told the FBI she drove him to the bar previously to scope it out.
