Election 2021: McAuliffe Concedes in Virginia, New Jersey Still a Nail-Biter

By The Stream Published on November 2, 2021

Democrats threw Biden, Obama, Harris, fake “white supremacists” and even tiki-torches and charges of book burning at him, but it wasn’t enough. Republican businessman Glenn Youngkin is projected to win the governor’s race in Virginia over former Clinton operative Terry McAuliffe.

In fact — assuming trucks full of ballots don’t show up in the dead of night — the GOP is shaping up to sweep the top three spots in Old Dominion. Conservative Winsome Sears will become the first black female to win statewide office in Virginia with her victory in the Lt. Governor’s race, while Jason Miyares has defeated the Soros-backed AG Mark Herring.

Winsome is a Jamaican immigrant, and former Marine who ran a homeless shelter for women before moving into politics.

Youngkin showed surprising strength in areas McAuliffe needed to do well in, and even outperformed what Trump did last year in heavily red areas. He scored in Richmond suburbs and Loudon County, indicating that McAuliffe’s repeated claim that parents shouldn’t have a say in what their schools teach … and the garbage that is being taught children … has cost Democrats dearly.

Exit polling showed the economy and education were the two biggest concerns of Virginia voters.

Youngkin certainly went into Election Day with the momentum. McAuliffe went in with feeble crowds, and last minute dirty tricks and smears. But also with a judge who allowed Virginia’s Democrat-heavy Fairfax County to accept countless applications for mail-in ballots, despite them not having the legally-required last for digits of the applicants’ SSN. (The judge rejected a suit by the Virginia Institute for Public Policy because the institute lacked the standing to sue.)

Just four days ago, Kamala Harris said “What happens in Virginia will in large part determine what happens in 2022, 2024 and beyond.”

That explains why nobody is popping the bubbly at CNN and MSNBC. Advil by the handful, perhaps, but not the bubbly.

McAuliffe conceded the race on Wednesday morning, saying in part: “Congratulations to Governor-Elect Glenn Youngkin on his victory. I hope Virginians will join me in wishing the best to him and his family.”

Initial Reaction: After McAuliffe Tried Making Trump an Issue, Trump Sends His Congrats

McAuliffe tried to make the race about Donald Trump — who, aside from owning a golf course and winery in Virginia, has nothing to do with the state. When Biden was campaigning for McAuliffe last week, he mentioned Trump two dozen times.

Which has given Trump the opportunity to gloat. The former president was quick to congratulate Youngkin … and his MAGA base:

I would like to thank my BASE for coming out in force and voting for Glenn Youngkin. Without you, he would not have been close to winning. The MAGA movement is bigger and stronger than ever before. Glenn will be a great governor. Thank you to the people of the Commonwealth of Virginia and most particularly, to our incredible MAGA voters!

Dave Rubin suggested Virginia sends a signal to the public.

Perhaps Allie Beth Stuckey explained what happened most succinctly:

Shocker: New Jersey Governor’s Race an Unexpected Nail-Biter

While all eyes were on Virginia, Republican Jack Ciattarelli was sneaking up on New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy. Right now the race is tighter than a Jersey Shore bar on a Saturday night. The 9:18 a.m. update showed Murphy finally inching ahead of Ciattarelli to a slender lead.

Regardless of the final results, the fact that Ciattarelli is in the fight in a state Joe Biden won by 16% a year ago, has got to be shaking the Democrats almost as much as the Virginia blowout.

Looks Like Minneapolis Will Not Be Trashing Its Police Department for a “Department of Public Safety.”

The Defund the Police crowd looks to be taking one on the chin in Minneapolis. A ballot measure to replace the Minneapolis Police Department with something called the “Department of Public Safety” looks to be going down in flames. The Associated Press reports the measure has been defeated.

Seattle Shows an Ounce of Sanity, Elects Moderate as City Attorney Over Police-Eliminating Radical

Want another sign even progressive cities have had enough of the crime and destruction? Seattle just elected a relative moderate as City Attorney, who believes the office is no “place for radical agenda.” Her name is Ann Davidson. Unlike progressive city attorney’s who’ve made a mess of America’s big cities, she believes the City Attorney’s office is no “place for radical agenda. Davidson swamped self-described police “abolitionist” Nicole Thomas Kennedy, gaining nearly 60% of the vote.
