Dick Van Dyke, 89, Delights in Viral Music Video

In a new Dustbowl Revival video, the Mary Poppins star shows he can still 'Step in Time.'

Question:  How many 89-year-olds can you find starring and shining in a new, viral music video?

And don’t say “Tony Bennett.” He’s a mere pup of 88.

Currently, the answer is one: Dick Van Dyke.

Yes, in these days dominated by the likes of Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande, the great Dick Van Dyke proves he’s still got it in a new music video rapidly making the social media rounds. The clip is for The Dustbowl Revival‘s new single,”Never Had to Go.”

As the band plays in his backyard, the Mary Poppins star busts out moves that would be the envy of Justin Bieber, cutting up and carrying on in a delightful, if desperate effort to distract his wife from cooking. Closing in on 90, Van Dyke performs as if movies like Poppins and Bye, Bye Birdie were shot yesterday rather than over half a century ago.

Members of The Dustbowl Revival, a Los Angeles-based roots band, say the collaboration came together rather easily. “They said come over and let’s do a video. So we did.”

The official video for “Never Had to Go” has been seen on YouTube by nearly 500,000 people in less than two weeks, and has nearly four million shares on Facebook.  Give Dick Van Dyke three minutes and you’ll see why.

If you want to step back in time, here’s Dick with Julie Andrews and the cast of Mary Poppins performing “Step in Time” in the 1964 Disney classic.

Meanwhile, Tony Bennett isn’t sitting around collecting dust either. The veteran crooner teamed with Lady Gaga at the Hollywood Bowl Saturday for a dazzling night of jazz standards. Like Van Dyke, Bennett is pushing 90 and still pushing young entertainers to try and keep up.
