‘He Was Dead’: Toddler Miraculously Survives Drowning in Pond

A Baker City, Oregon toddler drowned in a neighbor’s pond earlier this month when his family lost track of him. “He was dead,” his father Matthew told KBOI 2News. “He was blue and dead.”

But family members aren’t grieving. To hear 22-month-old Matty Cunningham’s mom and dad tell it, God answered their prayers with a miracle: He gave their baby boy a second chance at life.

Family members found him in the neighbor’s pond, pulled out his lifeless body and began performing CPR. “When I’m doing compressions, my children were on their knees praying and begging God for a miracle,” said Matty’s mom Elsa. “We just prayed and prayed and prayed,” added Matthew.

The county sheriff responded to the 911 call and raced Matty to the hospital in Baker City. Matty had no heartbeat, he wasn’t breathing and his body temperature was just 84 degrees. According to Elsa, “they painted the story of a dead child.”

They Told Us His Chances Were Terrible

The toddler and his mother were flown to a hospital in Boise and the news wasn’t any better. “They told us his chances were terrible,” said Elsa, “I could tell by their faces.” Family, friends and even Matty’s doctor prayed for him.

When the doctors performed an MRI on Matty, the doctors and his parents expected the worst.

But a miracle happened.

“Through the grace of God, they said his MRI was normal,” said Matthew. “There wasn’t a better word at that point a parent could want to hear.”

“Within a matter of hours, he was acting like himself, he was acting like Matty,” said Matthew. “He was perfect.”

“We just fell to our knees and thanked God,” Matthew said. “Praising God,” said Elsa. Matthew added, “You almost wonder if you’re going to wake up, it’s just a dream that’s too good to be true. You’re just going to wake up from it. My son is dead and now he’s alive. It defies any logic. This is just a miracle.”
