Cruz Dominates Trump in Wyoming, Rubio Wins DC Caucus

While protests and rumors of protests at Trump events dominated the Saturday political news cycle, the business of choosing delegates was quietly taking place in Wyoming and Washington, DC. And the results were good news for Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio and John Kasich.

District of Columbia

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio won Saturday’s Republican caucus in the District of Columbia, besting Ohio Gov. John Kasich by a mere 50 votes. The win gives Rubio ten delegates, while Kasich pockets nine. Sen. Ted Cruz and Donald Trump didn’t pick up enough votes to qualify for any delegates.

There are only 27,000 registered Republicans in the District, but turnout for the Republican presidential convention was high. According to local station WUSA 9, some voters had to wait three hours to cast their ballot and the convention had to stay open past the scheduled closing time of 4 p.m. to accommodate the hundreds of voters still waiting in line.

Wyoming

Ted Cruz won nine of the 12 delegates that were up for grabs in Saturday’s Republican county conventions. Cruz received 66% of the vote, Rubio 17%. Donald Trump only managed 7%.

Trump and Rubio each picked up a delegate and one remains uncommitted. Another 14 delegates will be awarded at the party’s state convention April 16.

The Delegate Count

Heading into Tuesday’s critical primaries in Ohio, Florida, Missouri and North Carolina, the delegate count currently stands at:

  • Trump: 460
  • Cruz: 370
  • Rubio: 163
  • Kasich: 63
  • Carson: 8
  • Bush: 4
  • Paul: 1
  • Huckabee: 1
  • Fiorina: 1

1,237 delegates are needed to secure the Republican nomination.
