Carson Will Not Seek a Cabinet Position in the Trump Administration

Retired neurosurgeon and former Presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson announced Tuesday in a Facebook post that he is not interested in being part of the Trump administration.

Despite media reports that he declined a position in President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet due to his lack of government experience, Carson said that was not the case.

“My decision not to seek a cabinet position in the Trump administration has nothing to do with the complexity of the job as is being reported by some news outlets,” Carson wrote. “I believe it is vitally important for the Trump administration to have many outspoken friends and advisers who are outside of the Washington bubble.”

Carson has a history of sticking with his convictions, even when they aren’t popular. After his own run for the presidency,  Carson was widely criticized when he endorsed Trump in March. Now he says, “It is vital to have independent voices of reason and reconciliation if our nation is to heal and regain its greatness. I will continue to work with the transition team and beyond as we build a dynamite executive branch of government.”

Media sources began reporting earlier on Tuesday that Carson had declined an offer to serve in Trump’s cabinet, after the news site Circa first broke the news. Carson’s business manager Armstrong Williams told Circa that “the President-elect offered him (Carson) anything he wanted to do. But in the end he didn’t want anything.” Williams had also told The Hill that “Dr. Carson feels he has no government experience, he’s never run a federal agency. The last thing he would want to do was take a position that could cripple the presidency.”

Circa also cited another unnamed source who said that Carson was being specifically offered to serve as Trump’s Secretary of Health and Human Services. Williams, however, stressed that Carson had been offered any position in the administration.

The retired neurosurgeon’s latest endeavors include his new Carson Ideas Forum. According to his website, the forum’s goal is to create a “community of conservative thought leaders from all across America coming together to discuss ideas, solutions and ways that we can get our country back on track.”
