The body of Rev. Billy Graham now lies in honor the Capitol Rotunda.

President Donald Trump, Speaker Paul Ryan, and Sen. Mitch McConnell joined other officials and dignitaries in pay tribute to America’s most famous evangelist. Rev. Graham died last week at age 99.

The North Carolina-born farm boy became a Southern Baptist minister and spiritual adviser to numerous presidents. He preached the gospel to more people than anyone in history, and has been called the most powerful evangelist since the apostle Paul.

“Everywhere he went,” Trump said at today’s ceremony, “the Rev. Billy Graham shared the same message: God loves you.”

Billy Graham is only the fourth private citizen to “lie in honor” in the Rotunda. The most recent was Rosa Parks in October of 2005. In 1998, United States Capitol Police Officer Jacob J. Chestnut and Detective John M. Gibson were honored after being killed thwarting an armed gunman.

Rev. Graham will lie in honor until Thursday. He will be laid to rest Friday in a private ceremony at the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte beside his beloved wife Ruth.
