Barna Group Releases Annual ‘Bible-Minded Cities’ Report: Where Does Your City Rank?

By Tom Gilson Published on January 21, 2016

The Barna Group (barna.org) on Wednesday released its annual “Bible-Minded Cities” report, ranking 100 U.S. cities on how their residents view and use the Bible.

The report, issued in partnership with the American Bible Society, listed America’s most Bible-minded cities as located in the traditional southern Bible Belt:

Most Bible-Minded:

  1. Chattanooga, Tenn.
  2. Birmingham/Anniston/Tuscaloosa, Ala.
  3. Roanake/Lynchburg, Va.
  4. Shreveport, La.
  5. Tri-Cities, Tenn (Kingsport, Johnson City, Bristol)

Third, fourth, and fifth places were a statistical tie.

The least Bible-minded cities cluster in the Northeast, with one central United States exception.

  1. Albany/Schenectady/Troy, N.Y. (least Bible-minded)
  2. Boston, Mass.
  3. Providence, R.I.
  4. Cedar Rapids/Waterloo, Iowa
  5. Buffalo, N.Y.

Rankings were obtained by surveying more than 65,000 adults over a ten-year period, with questions focused on how much they read the Bible, how much they enjoy reading it, and their level of agreement that its principles are accurate.

An infographic listing all 100 cities’ rankings is available on the Barna website.
