Tyriece “Lor Scoota” Watson, a rapper and peace advocate in Baltimore, was shot and killed this weekend as he was returning from a charity basketball game that had the tagline “Pray for peace in these streets.”

The 23-year-old was shot when “an unknown black male wearing a white bandanna stepped into the street and opened fire,” according to The Washington Post. He was pronounced dead soon after arriving at a local hospital.

Lor Scoota was a well-loved Baltimore rapper. The Washington Post reported that his song “Bird Flu” inspired many videos of fans doing the “Bird Flu dance.” He also spoke on the radio to promote non-violence after the death of Freddie Gray, spoke on a Baltimore panel for youth and read to an elementary school class about Martin Luther King Jr.

The shooter seemed to be targeting Lor Scoota, according to Baltimore police spokesman T.J. Smith. No motive has been identified yet and no suspects have been named, CNN reported. Smith said they have not made “as much progress as we would like.” Smith said Lor Scoota’s death is another in a tragic chain of deaths:

“The eerie irony that should just absolutely tick all of us off, collectively, is that he was leaving a peace rally that was held at a local university. This revolving door of death is something that’s despicable, and it’s leaving too many mothers to bury their children.”

Smith warned that some people may try to “scrutinize” the lyrics of Lor Scoota’s songs and “some of the activity he might’ve been involved in the past,” but that ultimately, Lor Scoota is a victim.

The Baltimore Sun reported that Baltimore residents reacted strongly to the shooting. Baron Verge, who goes by DJ Blacqstarr, said the community could identify with Lor Scoota’s music.

“He came from where I came from,” Verge said. “It’s rough times, you lose your family, you’re always going through a lot. He came and did something and transformed his life.”

The shooting follows shortly after a judge found the police officer charged with murder in the death of Freddie Gray not guilty on all charges. Officer Caesar Goodson Jr. was driving the van in which Gray sustained fatal injuries. The ruling Thursday left prosecutors without a conviction in the case that caused riots throughout Baltimore last year. Weeks after 25-year-old Gray was died, peaceful protests became violent as stores were looted, rocks thrown at police officers and buildings and cars were set on fire.
