How You Can Quickly Answer the Evolution Question

By The Stream Published on November 3, 2018

Christians get challenged on evolution all the time. Some are prepared to give great answers from science and the Bible, some don’t know what those great answers are. Here’s a great example of a quick answer from Frank Turek.

Turek’s answer isn’t a great answer, it’s a terrible answer which in the space of only 4 minutes manages to drag in 3 different false arguments against evolution. Turek’s conclusion – that even if evolution is true, it doesn’t mean Christianity is false – is correct. Everything else he says is wrong.

First, the Cambrian Explosion happened quickly in geological terms but it still lasted for at least 30 million years.

Second, no examples of “Irreducible Complexity” exist in the scientific literature. It is nothing more than a disproven creationist talking point. There isn’t any reason why a complex form cannot evolve in small steps, as long as each step doesn’t significantly hamper an organism’s chances of reproduction.

Thirdly, Turek’s explanation of epigenetics is wrong. It’s not about body plans, it’s about the expression of genes being affected by environmental factors. It doesn’t present any challenge to natural selection, as epigenetic changes cannot be inherited for more than a few generations at best.

    swordfish,

“it still lasted for at least 30 million years.”

First, based on what evidence? Second, it is irrelevant how long the Cambrian Explosion lasted, the argument is there are no organisms demonstrating evolution up to the complex body plans found in Cambrian Explosion, that is the vital factor, not how long it lasted.

“It is nothing more than a disproven creationist talking point.”

How has it been proven wrong, by whom, when and where is the documentation demonstrating irreducible complexity to be false?

“There isn’t any reason why a complex form cannot evolve in small steps, as long as each step doesn’t significantly hamper an organism’s chances of reproduction.”

Okay, using the old stand-by, demonstrate the step-by-step evolution of the human eye.

“It doesn’t present any challenge to natural selection, as epigenetic changes cannot be inherited for more than a few generations at best.”

You’re right on the operation of epigenetics but it does not help your cause at all. Natural selection is not a problem for ID or Creationism so you’re wasting your time using those arguments. Also, epigenetic inheritance has not been studied long enough to have any detailed understanding of its operation, so your claim is spurious at best.

Is that entire presentation available for viewing?

Well, I never heard of water evolving into the best of wines all by itself, but I have read John 2.
