American Runner Exhibits Olympic Spirit by Helping Rival After Fall

By Nancy Flory Published on August 16, 2016

Sometimes being a good sport means stopping your race to help someone else finish theirs.

That’s what American runner Abbey D’Agostino did during the 5,000m heat when fellow runner and rival Nikki Hamblin from New Zealand fell and accidentally tripped D’Agostino at the Rio Olympics. Rather than finish her own race, D’Agostino knelt down to comfort Hamblin and encouraged her to keep going.

“That girl is the Olympic spirit right there,” said Hamblin. “I went down and I was like ‘what’s happening? Why am I on the ground?’ Then suddenly this hand on my shoulder, like ‘get up, get up, we have to finish this’ and I was like, ‘yep, you’re right.’ This is the Olympic Games — we have to finish this.”

D’Agostino injured her knee during the fall and was seen later on the sidelines seated in a wheelchair.

Hamblin said D’Agostino’s kindness was unforgettable. “Regardless of the race and the result on the board, that’s a moment that you’re never going to forget for the rest of your life….”

Both runners placed in the 5,000m following a successful protest by the USA and New Zealand teams.
