A New Kind of ‘Art’: Parents are Making Leftover IVF Embryos Into Jewelry

One mother called her embryo necklace a "beautiful keepsake."

Couples who have leftover embryos after In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) are now making them into jewelry.

For those who do not want to donate, store or dispose of their remaining embryos, a company is offering to make them into rings or necklaces. But not everyone is happy about it. Some are downright horrified.

Baby Bee Hummingbird company started in 2014. The owner, Amy McGlade, said her business was a “pioneer” in making sacred art. “What a better way to celebrate your most treasured gift, your child, than through jewelry?” She asked.

Baby Bee Hummingbird has already made over 4,000 pieces of jewelry from breast milk, placenta, hair, ashes or cord stumps. Fifty pieces have been made with embryos. The company preserves the objects in jeweler’s grade resin.

McGlade said the couples who choose to make jewelry are aware of the options available for their embryos. Her company is providing another option. “It’s special because the embryos often signify the end of a journey, and we are providing a beautiful and meaningful way to gently close the door.”

“It’s about the everlasting tangible keepsake of a loved one that you can have forever,” McGlade added.

But not everyone agrees with the practice of making embryos into art. Self-described abolitionist Tony Harmon compared the jewelry to the Nazi’s making soap and lampshades from the bodies of murdered Jews. “I literally did a double take,” Harmon told The Liberator. “As I read the comments, I became infuriated at the cold-hearted callousness and dehumanizing remarks.” He compared the jewelry to mounting an elk or deer on the wall.

Harmon’s wife Brandy believes Baby Bee is trying to cash in on the couples who don’t want to continue paying the storage fees. And she doesn’t understand why people would not donate leftover embryos. “One lady on the comment thread (of the company’s website) said adoption was not an option for their family. Why? Why is murdering your children and wearing them as jewelry an option, but adoption isn’t?”

One mother said having the jewelry brought her joy. She added that she couldn’t destroy her babies. “Now they are forever with me in a beautiful keepsake.”
