5 Songs for Your Easter Celebrations

By Amelia Hamilton Published on April 4, 2015

Easter is the greatest celebration in a Christian’s year, when we celebrate the resurrection of Christ. One element to these celebrations is, of course, music. Here are 5 Easter favorites, from hymns to more contemporary tributes.

Jesus Christ is Risen Today

This staple of Easter hymns was based on a 14th century Latin hymn.  Here, listen to it performed by King’s College Choir, Cambridge.

Regina Coeli

Regina Coeli (meaning Queen of Heaven), dates back to the 12th century. In this video, you will hear Mozart’s third setting of the antiphon in praise of the Holy Mother.

Christ Arose

Robert Lowry composed this hymn in 1874 during the Easter season, inspired by Luke 24:6 “He is not here, but is risen.” Here, listen to three young women worship a capella.

He is Risen

This classic hymn was written by Joachim Neander (1650-1680). In this video, it is performed by The Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

The Old Rugged Cross

This song, written by George Bennard in 1913, has become a classic Christian song. It has been recorded and performed by many country music artists over the years and, in this video, we hear is sung by Johnny Cash.

He’s Alive

This song, from Dolly Parton’s 20th album, was released in May 1989. In this video, you’ll see her perform the song at the CMA Awards.
