Joy Break: High School Classmates Bring Prom to Hospitalized Student

By Nancy Flory Published on May 17, 2018

Terrence Mayhorn was born with a condition called encephalocele. He had his first surgery when he was only three days old. Now 19-years-old, he recently developed complications and ended up in Parkland Hospital in Dallas. Without the help of some great friends, he would have missed his Senior Prom.

Unknown to Terrence, his classmates from Grapevine High School plotted to bring the prom to him. Last week, they conspired with nurses to quickly decorated a conference room in the hospital’s Neurology Unit. His mom tricked Terrence into putting on a tux. She told him he was getting his picture taken.

When he walked into the conference room, Terrence was surprised. His classmates had voted him Prom King. Student body president Lyon Lee did the honors. “I’d like to announce that our class voted you as Prom King,” he said. Lee placed the official Prom King crown on Terrence’s head as everyone cheered.

“We don’t think it’s because Terrence was special needs or anything,” said Lee. “It’s because he is a special guy, and the class recognized that and we all voted for him.”

A classmate in a prom dress offered to be his date. Terrence danced to his favorite music by Michael Jackson and Bruno Mars.

Terrence’s mom, Sharon Okafor, was overwhelmed. “He’s such a popular kid, and he’s just so sweet. So, it couldn’t happen to a better person. He deserves it.”

Nurse Brandi Perez said it was really special to be able to give Terrence a prom. “Just knowing that we are going to make this moment for him special and memorable, none of us here are ever going to forget this.”

The hospital is expected to release Terrence in time to graduate with his class later this month.
