Historic Trip: Trump is First Sitting President to Visit the Western Wall

President Donald Trump became the first sitting U.S. president to visit the Western Wall in Jerusalem Monday. The Western Wall, or Wailing Wall, is one of Judaism’s most holy sites where Jews go to pray. It is an ancient retaining wall remaining from the Second Jewish Temple in the Old City of Jerusalem.

President Trump said that his visit to the Wall was “a great honor,” adding, “Words fail to capture the experience. It will leave an impression on me forever.”

It is common for visitors to place a note, a prayer, to God in the cracks in the Wall. President Trump appeared to pray just before he placed his note in the Wall, The Associated Press reported.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged that President Trump’s visit was historic and called it a “powerful expression of [Trump’s] friendship to Israel” and a sign of strong ties between the countries, reported The Times of Israel.

Netanyahu said he was confident that Trump’s leadership will help create an even stronger alliance between Israel and the United States.

Trump said, “I can see a much deeper path, friendship with Israel.”

Senior administration officials said that the historic visit is part of Trump’s efforts to highlight “the need for unity among three of the world’s great religions” on his first foreign trip.

Trump visited Saudi Arabia on Sunday and asked Muslim leaders to “drive out the terrorists and extremists” from their lands. Today he traveled to Rome for a meeting Wednesday with Pope Francis.
