Winning (and Keeping) Catholic Voters

Nearly a quarter of all Christians in the U.S. belong to the Roman Catholic Church, reflecting the faith’s position as the single largest denomination in both the U.S. and across the world. For many years, Democrats could rely upon Catholics to consistently back them and their policies, contributing to their large victories over decades.

But that’s changing. The Pew Research Center recently discovered that 53 percent of white Catholics prefer the Republican Party, while only 39 percent favor the Democrats. This 14-point spread is the largest in the organization’s polling history. In 1992, only 40 percent of white Catholics supported the GOP, while 60 percent backed Democrats. Remarkably, this is a 20-point shift toward the Republican Party over the span of just two decades.
