Who’s Burning Down the Homes of Bukharian Jews in Queens?

By Published on December 8, 2015

Another arson attack on Sunday at the home of Rabbi Zalman Zvulonov of the Bukharian Jewish Center has left the close-knit Bukharian Jewish community of Forest Hills, Queens reeling.

The attack, which took place at 12:20 a.m. at 112-35 69th Road, was the second attempt to burn down the rabbi’s home; the first attempt was made on Nov. 15.

Police released a photo today taken from video captured by a surveillance camera of the suspect riding a motorcycle and wearing a scarf over his face, a green helmet and glasses.

The suspect also left behind a note on Nov. 25 at the scene of a different attack, this one at 108-47 67th Drive. After decoding it, police found the name of a Forest Hills resident who they suspect is responsible for at least six fires in the area over the past four weeks. No name has yet been released.

Seven construction sites have been the site of fires in the area in recent weeks, prompting an investigation by the NYPD Arson and Explosive Squad and igniting fear among locals.

All seven buildings set ablaze belong to Bukharian Jews, according to community leader Aron Borukhov, a fact initially overlooked by mainstream media coverage.
