Scott Walker to Propose Sweeping Crackdown on Unions

By Published on September 14, 2015

Under President Scott Walker, it would be illegal for federal workers to form unions, and the National Labor Relations Board would be no more.

The Republican presidential candidate will unveil those proposals, and others, on Monday in Las Vegas, according to details shared with The Associated Press, in order to “achieve fairness and opportunity for all American workers.”

Walker would transfer some of the NLRB’s powers to the National Mediation Board and propose that the federal courts system take on what he described to the AP as the labor board’s “quasi-judicial functions.” Walker’s right-to-work proposal, if passed by Congress, would require states to vote to get out of the right-to-work requirement.

President Barack Obama’s proposed regulations that would require employers to pay salaried employees overtime rates and provide paid sick leave would fall by the wayside in a Walker administration.

Among his other ideas, provided to the AP, the governor of Wisconsin will call for an end to unions’ practice of deducting dues from public employees’ paychecks to fund political activities. Some of these proposals, including the ban on federal workers forming unions, would require an act of Congress, something Walker acknowledged would not be an easy lift.
