Transgender ‘Queen’ Loses Crown for Not Being ‘Trans’ Enough

The winner of a transgender beauty contest in the United Kingdom has lost her title after organizers ruled that he was simply a drag queen and not transgender enough. According to The Telegraph, 22-year-old Jai Dara Latto was named Miss Transgender UK last September. But now, a photo of Latto wearing boxer shorts has caused his title to be unceremoniously revoked. The photo made pageant organizer Rachael Bailey conclude that Latto was simply a gay drag queen, rather than a person living full-time as a woman. “Underwear is very important to transgender females – one of the first thing people do is change their underwear as it makes us feel like we are finally a woman,” Bailey said, according to The Scotsman.

Bailey bluntly said that it was a matter of “one transgender person saying to another ‘You’re not transgender enough to be in our competition,’” admitting that it all sounded rather “daft.”

Now, Latto will be forced to turn over his crown to fellow competitor Daisy Bell, who will also receive the grand prize of £10,000 ($14,400) to pay for gender transition surgeries in India, along with a £3,000 ($4,300) modeling contract.

In the wake of losing his prize, Latto has attacked Bailey, saying the Miss Transgender UK pageant imposed a “female stereotype of long hair, tight clothes and lacy underwear” on competitors.
