Is Ted Cruz Unelectable?

By Published on January 25, 2016

A great number of Republican primary voters worry deeply that Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) will never be able to win a general election. That’s not an irrelevant worry. Harry Enten of FiveThirtyEight.com wrote way back in March 2015 that Cruz wouldn’t be able to win the nomination because he’s too hated by the establishment insiders, but also because “Cruz has an electability problem … Four national live polls taken since December have tested Cruz in a matchup against Hillary Clinton. In each one of these polls, Cruz has done the worst of any of the possible 2016 Republican nominees.”

It turns out that the establishment’s discomfort with Cruz is actually a selling point — nobody in the base likes the establishment. And as for Hillary, those polls have faded into memory — the latest Wall Street Journal has Hillary leading Cruz by 4 points, 49 percent to 45 percent, while the Fox News poll has Cruz beating Hillary 50 to 43 percent in a head-to-head matchup. In other words, it’s anybody’s ballgame.
