Senate Judiciary Chairman Gives Obama a Lesson on the Constitution

By Published on March 4, 2016

Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, used his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference to remind grassroots activists that it’s not just President Barack Obama who gets to decide the next justice on the Supreme Court.

“The Senate has its own authority to consent or not consent,” Grassley told the CPAC crowd. “There are separation of powers for a specific purpose throughout this Constitution. These separation of powers are designed for accountability.”

As chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Grassley is facing pressure from Democrats to conduct hearings on Obama’s eventual Supreme Court nominee. He’s cited the Democrats’ own treatment of past nominees as a model for an election year vacancy.
