Anne Arundel County officials recently fought a Maryland Board of Education policy that does not notify parents when a transgender student sleeps in the same room as students of the opposite biological gender.

Steven R. Schuh, County Executive for Anne Arundel County in Maryland, wrote a letter to Board of Education President Stacy Korbelak asking her to re-think the policy, reports the Washington Times.

Forcing children to bunk with transgender students is unfair, Schuh claimed in the letter.

“We hereby ask the Board to reconsider accommodations for transgender students that would have a negative effect on other students and to adopts policies that would require all students to sleep in either facilities that comport with their biological genders or in single-occupancy facilities,” Schuh wrote with Amalie E. Brandenburg, an education officer.

Schuh wrote that while schools should support their transgender students, he did not agree with “extreme” measures.

“However, we do not support unnecessary and extreme accommodations that would have negative impacts on other students, including sleeping in overnight field-trip sleeping arrangements that do not comport with a person’s biological gender,” the letter continued.

The letter comes after a July training video for Anne Arundel County Public Schools revealed that the school cannot tell parents if a boy who transitioned to a girl sleeps in the same room as other female students.

“And the answer is, they sleep with the females. That’s not the easy answer; it’s the right answer. And in some cases, it’s going to cause issues, because … the private information piece doesn’t allow you to share that with parents of all of the other campers,” Bob Mosier, the chief communications officer for the county’s public schools, said in the training video.

Some parents expressed their discomfort with the policy.

“I don’t know what the answer is. I’m not sure that I feel comfortable with the situation of someone who is, let’s say, going through some sort of change and staying with the girls on an overnight trip,” one mother told Fox 5.
