Refugees Break Through Border Fence, Get Teargassed by Macedonian Police

The situation along Greece’s border with Macedonia is getting out of control as Macedonia’s border patrol is forced to launch teargas at desperate migrants to keep them out.

Migrants have been stranded in the Greek city of Idomeni since Macedonia closed its border in February. A large group of refugees tried to break the razor-wired fence Sunday morning. When police stopped their attempt, the migrants started throwing rocks and police responded with teargas and stun grenades.

German state news outlet Deutsche Welle report the migrants had smeared toothpaste in their faces in preparation for the teargas. More than 200 refugees and 15 police officers were injured in the clashes. Five police officers were left with serious injuries, according to Russia Today.

“We run away from war, [then] we find another war here,” a masked migrant says in the video. “This is criminal.”

The Macedonian border patrol tried to negotiate with the migrants before the protests broke out. Officers insist they are simply following orders from the European Union, and urged migrants to keep calm.

“We are not the ones who keep the borders closed,” a Macedonian police officer said with the help of an English-speaking interpreter. “We are following Europe’s orders.”
