Pro-Life Group Asks Iowa to Cut All Exceptions From Abortion Law

By Published on June 19, 2018

A pro-life group filed a lawsuit Tuesday, asking Iowa to remove its exceptions from a law banning women from aborting their unborn babies if a heartbeat is detected.

“Save The 1” filed a lawsuit asking the state to remove exceptions from its “Fetal Heartbeat” law that bans abortion where a heartbeat can be detected. Those exceptions include rape, incest and what are deemed “fatal” fetal abnormalities. A heartbeat typically manifests at about six weeks into a pregnancy.

Save The 1 is a nonprofit comprised of women who were conceived by rape or incest and women who became pregnant by rape or incest. Its “mission is to educate everyone on why all pre-born children should be protected by law and accepted by society, without exception and without compromise,” according to its website.

The group argues that the law’s exceptions “target their very lives,” and violates the right to equal protection, The Des Moines Register reported.

The lawsuit comes after a judge placed a temporary injunction on Iowa’s law on June 1. It also follows a lawsuit filed by Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) against Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds and the Iowa Board of Medicine in an attempt to strike down Iowa’s law. They allege that Iowa’s law is cruel and reckless. “Not only is this law blatantly unconstitutional — it’s extremely harmful to women,” a Planned Parenthood representative said, according to National Public Radio.

Iowa’s law banning abortions in the presence of a fetal heartbeat will remain ineffective until both Save The 1 and Planned Parenthood’s lawsuits are resolved.
