Dr. Ben Carson spent last week defending a comment he made about the potential of a Muslim one day being elected President of the United States. But after an interview from this weekend, how he handled the tough questions on his statement may have only added to the controversy facing the Republican presidential candidate.

The original statement that put Carson under so much scrutiny happened during an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, when he said:

“I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that.”

In an interview aired Sunday on CNN, Jake Tapper pressed Carson on the issue, asking the neurosurgeon if he believes that all Muslims want a theocracy.
