A daycare attached to a church in Las Cruces is closing its doors, and parents are upset over the reasons why.

First Baptist Church’s Senior Pastor Dr. David Burrows told KFOX14 that church officials are refusing to accept government funds, because they don’t want the government telling them who they can hire.

Parents said church officials told them they don’t want the government forcing them to hire “homosexuals or atheists.”

Burrows did not deny the allegations.

“When the government gives you money, they have the right to tell you how to run certain aspects of your organization,” he said. “We understand that. It’s not one particular group. It’s the fact they get to dictate to us, across the board, how to run our organization or different organization or ministries.”
