Ohio Abortion Clinic Says It’s Not an Abortion Clinic. It Provides Abortions

Your Choice Healthcare abortion clinic opened Monday and now its lobbying director alleges that the facility isn’t really an abortion clinic.

“When we talk about the count of the number of abortion clinics in Ohio, we are talking about the clinics that have to be licensed by the Ohio Department of Health and provide the full spectrum of abortion care,” NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Executive Director Kellie Copeland said, according to WKSU. She explained that she doesn’t consider her organization to be an actual abortion clinic because it doesn’t provide surgical abortions.

The clinic sits on the northeast aide of Columbus. It offers medication abortions up to nine weeks and six days in pregnancy. The abortion pill is 98 percent effective for women less than eight weeks pregnant and 96 percent effective for women eight to nine weeks pregnant. The abortion pill is 91 to 93 percent effective for women who are between nine and 10 weeks in pregnancy, Planned Parenthood reported.

The clinic is also seeking a license to do surgical abortions.

“The more options patients have to be able to access the care they need in a safe place in their community, that’s a positive thing,” Copeland said when the clinic opened, The Columbus Dispatch reported.

The abortion pill costs roughly $300 to $800 depending on the state and the woman’s health care plan. The abortion pill costs $525 at Ohio’s new clinic, according to its website.

Thirty-four states mandate that clinicians who perform medication abortions be licensed physicians, according to the Guttmacher Institute.
