The shootings were the latest in an ongoing saga of violent crime in New York City. The city saw 20% more murders in November 2022 than during the same month the previous year, while reported burglaries and grand larcenies decreased by about roughly 6% and 5.5%, respectively, based on preliminary police statistics.
