New Record Number of Migrants Enters Hungary

A new record number of migrants entered Hungary during the weekend as the country rushes to finish building a fence on its border with Serbia to stem the flow of people into the country.

Police said 4,330 migrants were detained Saturday — over 700 more than those previously detained in a day, the Associated Press reported.

Authorities in Hungary hope the 13-feet high fence will deter refugees, many of them Syrian, and other migrants from entering the country, along with extra border police. New rules criminalizing illegal border crossings and speeding up asylum decisions will take effect Tuesday.
