USS Long Beach (CGN 9) was the first nuclear-powered surface ship in the world and the first in the U.S. Navy with the main battery consisting of guided missiles. Built in the Bethlehem Steel Company’s Fore River Shipyard at Quincy Massachusetts, the ship’s keel was laid on December 2, 1957, and the ship was launched on July 14, 1959.
