McConnell Takes Aim at 20-Week Abortion

By Published on January 25, 2018

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell promised Thursday afternoon to take up legislation that would ban abortions after 20-weeks.

“There are only 7 countries left that still permit elective abortion after 20 weeks—including the US, China, and North Korea. That’s why the will soon vote to take up commonsense legislation to protect unborn children who can feel pain,” McConnell tweeted Thursday.

Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina is putting forth legislation that would make it illegal for a person to perform, or event attempt to perform, an abortion after 20-weeks of pregnancy. The penalty would be up to five years in prison, a fine or some combination of both.

Republicans have to pass the bill through regular order, meaning the legislation would require 60 yes votes to make it through the Senate.

The legislation does include exemptions for women who are victims of rape, but only if the the woman received medical treatment or counseling at least 48 hours before the abortion.
