Jewish Hospital Staff Treated Synagogue Shooter With Compassion as He Spewed Hate

The hospital staff at Pittsburgh’s Allegheny General Hospital treated suspected shooter Robert Bowers after his alleged crime, and some of them are Jewish — its president is even a member of the synagogue where the tragedy occurred.

DCNF-300The first three people who took care of Bowers are Jewish, according to Dr. Jeffrey Cohen, CNN reported Thursday.

“Isn’t it ironic that somebody who’s yelling in the ambulance and the hospital, ‘I want to kill all the Jews,’ is taken care of by a Jewish nurse, and there’s a Jewish hospital president that comes in to check on him afterwards?” Cohen said.

Cohen introduced himself to Bowers and asked the suspected shooter how he was feeling after the hospital staff treated his wounds, he told CNN. The doctor is a member of the Tree of Life synagogue where Bowers allegedly murdered 11.

One of the nurses treating Bowers is a rabbi’s son, Cohen also said, CNN reported.

“He [the nurse] took care of this guy. He did everything he could. He was extremely professional.”

“We don’t ask questions (about) who they are. We don’t ask questions about their insurance status or whether they can pay,” Cohen told CNN. “To us, they’re patients.”

The shooting took place at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood, a predominately Jewish area.

Bowers was allegedly armed as he entered the synagogue yelling, “All Jews must die!” according to KDKA.

“Today 11 innocent people were suddenly and viciously murdered during religious services and several law enforcement officers were shot,” Attorney General Jeff Session said Saturday after the shooting in a statement. “These alleged crimes are reprehensible and utterly repugnant to the values of this nation.”

Bowers pleaded not guilty Thursday to 44 federal charges, 32 of which warrant the death penalty, according to the grand jury filing. If Bowers is convicted and not sentenced to death, he could receive either a sentence of 535 years in prison or a life sentence without parole.
