Iran Setting Up Terror Networks in the U.S., Says Israel Defense Minister

By Published on February 25, 2016

Israel’s Minister of Defense claimed that Iran is setting up a global terror network which is poised to commit attacks on the U.S. and Europe on command.

Moshe Ya’alon warned that the “sleeper cells” being set up by Iran are collecting weapons, intelligence and gathering operatives on Wednesday while on a trip to Cyprus. He believes that Iran is creating “emissaries” intended to spread the Islamic revolution worldwide.

“The Iranian regime through the Iranian Revolutionary Guard corps is building a complex terror infrastructure including sleeping cells that are stockpiling arms, intelligence and operatives and are ready to act on order including in Europe and America,” said Ya’alon.

He noted that the Syrian civil war has created “widespread infiltration by murderous, merciless terror organizations.”

Ya’alon noted that in addition to creating terrorist cells, Iran has created a “dangerous axis” across various cities in the Middle East, including the capitals of Syria, Yemen, Lebanon and Iraq.

While Ya’alon offered no new evidence to back up his claim, Iran’s financing and support of terrorist groups like Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Palestinian Hamas have been well known for some time. Additionally, concern over Iran’s influence in Iraq and its continued support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, in conjunction with Russia, has drawn concern over officials and experts alike.

Former U.S. ambassador to Iraq James Jeffrey has referred to the Iran-Russia-Syria alliance as the “number one problem in the whole region.”

Iran’s coalition countering Western interests in the Middle East has been referred to as the ‘Axis of Resistance.’ The Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a Washington, D.C.-based think tank, has defined it as a group of “state and non-state actors” led by Iran that includes Hezbollah and various other predominantly Shia militant groups.

In a piece for the Daily Beast published in September, James Miller claimed that the ‘Axis of Resistance’ now includes Russia, Syria, Iran, Iraq and Hezbollah given Russia’s continued bombing campaigns in Syria. This group has also been referred to as the ‘4+1 alliance,’ which was supposedly secretly created in September when all parties agreed to cooperate militarily and politically in Iraq and Syria.
