Iran is Seeking Illicit Nuclear Weapons Technology, Says German Intelligence
Just one year after last year’s nuclear deal with Iran, German intelligence officials have published a report which says the rogue nation continues to seek illicit nuclear technology.
The claim originated from an annual report by Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, or BfV. The report stated that Iran is engaged in a “clandestine” effort to acquire nuclear technology and equipment from various German companies.
“The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution also registered a further increase in the already considerable procurement efforts in connection with Iran’s ambitious missile technology program which could among other things potentially serve to deliver nuclear weapons,” said the report.
“Against this backdrop it is safe to expect that Iran will continue its intensive procurement activities in Germany using clandestine methods to achieve its objectives.”
The BfV noted Iran’s attempts to acquire nuclear technology in Germany at a “quantitatively high level” in 2015. This activity continued throughout the year despite the fact that the Islamic Republic agreed to halt its nuclear weapons program as part of last July’s Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly referred to as the Iran nuclear deal.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel lambasted Iran’s pursuit of illegal missile technology in her response to the report.
“Iran continued unabated to develop its rocket program in conflict with the relevant provisions of the UN Security Council,” Merkel told the Bundestag, Germany’s parliament.
The chancellor went on to explain that the growing Iranian missile threat is exactly the reason why NATO has deployed a missile interceptor installation in Romania, with plans to install another in Poland.
Iran has engaged in several ballistic missile tests since JCPOA was signed. While the missile tests do not necessarily break the tenets of the nuclear agreement, they are in violation of United Nations sanctions against Iran. Iran currently maintains one of the largest and most diverse missile stockpiles in the Middle East.
