Iowans Applaud Newly Passed Abortion Law

By Published on May 9, 2018

Iowans are pleased about the state’s newly passed ban on abortions in the presence of a fetal heartbeat, Republican Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds told reporters Tuesday.

Reynolds said she has received “very positive feedback” from Iowans and that she will continue to represent their pro-life interests, according to the Des Moines Register. She also acknowledged the “passionate feelings on both sides of this issue.”

Reynolds’s statements came on Friday after she signed a measure into law banning all abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected. A heartbeat typically manifests at about six weeks into a pregnancy. The law will take effect July 1 and limits abortion access more than any other state in the U.S.

The new legislation also bans the sale of all fetal tissue in the state.

“I think that I have made it very clear that I am pro-life and, as a governor, I would do everything that I could to protect the life of the unborn,” Reynolds said, the Des Moines Register reported.

South Carolina nearly passed a law banning all abortions except those performed in the case of rape, incest and to save the mother’s life, but the bill died in the state’s Senate.

“We will challenge this law with absolutely everything we have on behalf of our patients because Iowa will not go back,” Planned Parenthood of the Heartland CEO Suzanna de Baca said after the abortion ban became law, according to CBS News.

Reynolds’ statements follow reports of increased pro-life protests and advocacy outside of abortion clinics across the country, according to The Associated Press.
