Illinois Medicaid Pays for Abortions, Pro-Life Citizens Object

Abortion coverage of state citizens is paid for by citizens' tax dollars.

A resident of Chicago’s South Side didn’t have the money to pay for an abortion, but that didn’t matter because Illinois’ Medicaid program pays for women to abort their unborn children.

“I’m thankful I was able to use the medical card because I don’t have the money right now,” the Chicago woman, who asked to remain anonymous, told the Chicago Tribune on Monday.

The woman aborted her unborn child after the state passed House Bill 40, which provides abortion coverage for Illinois residents and state employees via Medicaid. The state estimates it costs $1.8 million annually to pay for abortion coverage. The law took effect Jan 1.

The woman aborted her unborn child for about $500 at Planned Parenthood of Illinois Near North Health Center, the Tribune reported.

While some Illinois residents are pleased that women will be able to have abortions free of charge if they cannot afford the procedure, others said they see the new law as an affront to pro-life members of society.

“The fact that the government is using taxpayer money to fund abortion is reprehensible to me,” said Springfield Right to Life president Tim Moore, the Tribune reported. “I’m subsidizing an immoral act. I’m subsidizing the culture of death.”

“The government, which is supposed to protect life, is willfully taking part in the slaughter of innocents,” Moore added.

A group of pro-life organizations and a number of Republican lawmakers sued to block House Bill 40 and appealed to the Illinois State Supreme Court in February after a judge refused to hear their case. The lawsuit is currently pending.
