House Oversight Committee Censures IRS Commissioner

By Published on June 15, 2016

The House Committee on Oversight and Reform censured IRS Commissioner John Koskinen in a 23-15 vote Wednesday, saying he should have done more to stop the agency from targeting conservative organizations for excessive scrutiny.

“The resolution expresses the sense of the House that Mr. Koskinen engaged in a pattern of conduct inconsistent with the trust and confidence placed in him as an Officer of the United States, urges Mr. Koskinen’s resignation or removal, and requires forfeiture of his government pension and any other federal benefits for which he is eligible,” the committee said in a statement.

The formal condemnation suggests Koskinen forfeit his government pension, with GOP lawmakers saying he has shown a “pattern of conduct inconsistent with the trust and confidence placed in him as an Officer of the United States.”

The commissioner, who GOP lawmakers say failed to adhere to the committee’s subpoenas and answered questions untruthfully, was not present for the markup.

A resolution for Koskinen’s  impeachment, introduced by committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz of Utah, is currently pending.

The Senate is unlikely to take up the measure.
