GOP: Crucial Steps Missed in Vetting of San Bernardino Shooter for US Visa

By Published on December 23, 2015

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) is releasing the K-1 “fiancee” visa file for San Bernardino, Calif., shooter Tashfeen Malik to bolster his argument that immigration officials missed crucial vetting steps.

Goodlatte said on Tuesday that in order to obtain a fiance visa, the U.S. citizen and the foreign national must prove they have met in person, but her visa file “does not show sufficient evidence” this requirement was met.

“What is worse, the immigration official reviewing Malik’s application requested more evidence to ensure the two met in person but it was never provided and her visa was approved anyway,” he said.

Indeed, her files shows that the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) had submitted a “Request for Evidence” to prove that Malik and her husband, co-shooter Syed Rizwan Farook, had met in person or had been in each other’s physical presence at any time during the two years prior to the application.
